school started about one week ago. i was very apprehensive about school and waking up early and the sec 4 year end exams before the holiday was over, but i guess it all turned out okay (:

granted, going to school means waking up early and dragging yourself to the bus stop to board the bus to school, making sure you understand every word that is said during class AND READING UP ON TOPICS YOURSELF. that is tiring. but it somehow also gives me a sense of purpose. it gives me the feeling that i'm doing the right thing. i feel that it is what i ought to do.

so, well, our class had an almost complete change of teachers. the only 2 teachers who continued taking our class were foo ling ling and teo poh poh. we were joking that both of these teachers had a repeat word in their name, and that is why they had to "repeat" teaching our class again >.<

math has been split into math 1 and math 2. i don't really see the actual difference between this and doubling your math gpa. i mean, if they are going to give the same questions, with the easier ones in math 1 and the more difficult ones in math 2, you are still going to get the same score right? just that you get an average score for the normal math paper while you get a high score for math and a low score for math 2. in which case high + low = medium, which still makes you average.

ohh yes and they split each chinese class into 3 classes, with A being the worse and C being the best. i don't know why they did it all of a sudden, without forewarning us or anything -.- yeahh. so i ended up in B with my CLE teacher doubling up as my HCL teacher. bleah.

what else ... they're giving us a maths test covering almost all of the sec 3 chapters (excluding statistics) just 2 weeks into school! which is next week! if not for my dialogue over msn with a classmate i wouldn't even have known! (my classmate knew about the impending surprise test from her senior). and what's interesting (and harrowing at thesame time) about it is that it will constitute 8% of my final grade for maths!

*cusses, using all the expletives she can think of*

oh well, discussing the impending test just makes me more nervous about it. i shall now stop the time wasting activity of blogging and continue revising trigonometry.

i haven't blogged for a long, long time.

i suppose i've had a lot of time this holiday to think through everything this holiday. 10 hours of sleep definitely helps you think a lot more clearly than 6.

i've gotten over many, many issues that were bogging me down this year. some of them have been trivial, while others have influenced my character and perspectives perhaps forever.

i guess there are some things that you just have to get over, in order to move on to a better and brighter future.

but somehow i'm not sure how to go about passing next year. it's my last year in rgs, my last year as a secondary school student. it seems just yesterday that i received the news that i'd been posted to the school, that i went for the orientation camp. everything just seems to have passed so quickly. it's almost like i'd held my breath, submerged myself in a swimming pool, shut my eyes tight due to the pressure, and risen back up to the water's surface after 30 seconds. like everything's just passed in a blur and i'm back at the same spot where i started off. or rather, i don't sense that i've made any progress whatsoever.

it's a complicated, poignant feeling. a sensation that i sometimes wish i never had to experience.

but then again, i tell myself, i'll do my best. i know i have made mistakes, some of them serious, which i do regret, but i really hope to be given another chance to prove myself. and i'll work hard. harder than i've ever worked in my entire life.

i am at peace, because i truly understand now (:

not too long ago, i was an innocent secondary one, having just been posted into rgsrcy.

my first day at orientation training was a blast - complete with fun, games, and of course, lots of team bonding etc.

somehow that spirit's gone -- like the wind. a short, subtle breeze, yet substantial enough to make one's heart race, make one's nerves pulsate.

two years have passed in the blinking of an eye (or even shorter, really)

it was like travelling back in time today -- reliving what it was like as the most junior of the batches.

and somehow where the past is concerned, one can't help but feel a tinge of longing and regret.

I just typed in the word "sandfly" in wikipedia and in a nutshell, this is what it said.

The sandfly (or sand flea) is a colloquial name for any species or genus of flying, biting, blood-sucking Dipteran encountered in sandy areas. It is attracted to human flesh, and may even spread diseases.

ohmygod, I have been cut off from mainland civilisation for five whole days, and I have made the stunning discovery mosquito repellent only works for mosquitoes and not other types of insects. so you can imagine my surprise when i found out that i was getting bitten not by mosquitoes, but instead by the much more vicious sandflies! woe betide them, i am now covered in red pus filled spots (sandfly bites) all over! Urghhh...

OBS. At present no single word can describe this fascinating yet perilous experience. It has made me realise many things, but also etched into my memory experiences that I can never ever forget. All of us were mercilessly battered by the elements; baked and scorched by the sun, cold and dizzy by the turbulent sea.

we were all mobile because somehow they decided to abolish the residential section just for our cohort, so we had to pitch tents and sleep in them for all four nights. btw, they smelled like fishing nets, totally suffocating. plus my watch (i.e. group) had to go through both the land and sea expeditions.

our land expedition consisted of a gruelling 8 hours navigating and trekking through thick and humid forests and the horribly contoured paths of the hills. humans err, not to mention mere greenhorns like us. i later heard from our instructor that we had actually been going in circles for quite a while. what's more, we even had to carry our ton heavy bagpacks throughout the whole journey. I wouldn't be surprised if I have a hairline crack in my shoulder or a stunted backbone!

the land expedition was bad, but the sea expedition was much much worse in comparison. yes, i know our watch got a slightly shorter path cutting through the island, but we paid a terrible price for it. the first part of the journey went quite well, but as noon approched, we were stranded in the MANGROVE MUD when the low tide set in. then came the experience of a lifetime, if you get what i mean. we had to get off our triyaks (similiar to kayaks but with 3 people peddling) when the water receeded to a mere stream and FREAKING PUSH THEM THROUGH THE THICK SLIMY MUD. if you have ever tried walking in quicksand, you will know what i mean. every step taken was a struggle. you had to crawl in the sloppy mud, sinking deeper and deeper with every step taken. I was covered from head to toe in mud. the humus was invaded with tiny snails with scarlet red shells and crabs. ohmygod the crabs. that was the reason why so many of us have so many unexplained cuts. many of us lost shoes and socks. our trackpants kept slipping, and i am sure the mud entered our pelvis and groin areas. I know this is starting to sound disgusting, but if you feel that way now I don't think you understand the inevitability of that situation. It was the dirtiest I have ever been in my entire life, ploughing through the filth and pushing our heavy triyaks along as well. the whole expedition lasted for 12 hours; it was 6+ in the morning when we set out, and we only reached our destination at sunset, famished and fatigued.

oh yes and the state of their equipment? i should have forseen what i was about to go through when on the first day of obs i discovered that there were permanent traces of muddy stains on the bottles, ponchos and harnesses that were loaned out to participants.

the only consolation i have is that i am not sunburnt, and this is purely due to the fact that i have religiously applied my SPF 50 sunblock at least every 2 hours to every nook and cranny of exposed skin (:

despite all this, I feel that I have really learnt a lot about myself; my strengths and weaknesses, and also about by classmates during this eventful 5 days. it has taught me to expect the unexpected, think the unthinkable, and basically be creative and resourceful even during times of uncomfort or pressure.

One of the questions in the feedback form asked us if we would join an OBS course again. My answer was:

"Maybe, if I am able to forget the pain yet retain the wonderful experiences."

7) The Emperors of Qing China were only allowed to take 3 mouthfuls of each dish. pathetic.
8) Our taxi fare back home amounted to a (staggering) $32.90. I recall our one way trip to the airport was only about $22. must be the increment in charges.
9) Empress Dowager CiXi drinks human milk everyday. Imagine that.

i came across a rather weird permutation on my rubik's revenge. i couldn't form the cross on the last layer, so I just skipped the step first. the end result was:

the other sides are all solved, except one edge group which is flipped!
and then i realised that it briefly resembles the two front teeth of a rabbit or something >.< the resolution isn't very good.

so i checked out a few websites, including speedcubing.com to learn how to fix it. and here's the solution:

because there is this fingering that requires you to use 1-4 for an octave and quickly change to 1-5 on an adjacent octave.

hoho i went shopping today at Jurong Point (Boon Lay)!

Haha went there to buy some winter clothing for beijing. looked around some shops and found out that some of the clothes there were really expensive! like $40-$50 la. but then there was this pair of (jeans?) which were quite thick and all, so i grabbed two pairs, one light brown and the other pink.

then i went to a specialised shop selling winter clothing. bought 2 pairs of long johns. skipped the thick coats and gloves 'cos i already have them. actually i think i should have bought ear muffs too but oh wells...

haha then i had dinner at subway.

6-inch parmesan oregano (toasted) + turkey ham + cheese + all the vegetables + chipotle southwest sauce is the love!

haha so fun so fun :)

what is this world coming to.

1) i just discovered a wasp nest behind my air-conditioner ventilator. It looked like it was depositing nectar into the holes. My father says he'll probably melt it while the wasp is away,
and then it will become a homeless wasp >.<

2) omg my sister's chinese teacher died on her birthday! he was like 45 years old and he died of a sudden heart attack while getting to his car. goodness life's so unpredictable.

3) this is more of a joke. you know sometimes when you're unlucky you change your handphone number and you get a number that was previously used by another company. and then you start to receive repeated phonecalls asking to speak to someone you don't even know.

my father kept receiving phonecalls from various people enquiring about travel packages and asking for airplane tickets.

so obviously the previous owner of his handphone number must have been someone from a travel agency.

after a while it gets seriously irritating.

so by no. 10th phone call,

his reply was:

"Hello, this is Singapore Casket Pte Ltd, what can I do for you?"

erm i meant on the screen before you because technically, singapore is a sunny tropical country and it is almost impossible to see natural snow unless there has been some volcanic eruption that has produced an ash cloud that is blocking out the sun's rays.

camp was okay. i still feel a little disappointed that i didn't get it. i was just one stamp away.

but hey, that was the first time i handled soccer! and archery! and dragon boating! and the high elements! i wouldn't give that up for anything else; the fun, the excitement, the tense moments, and even those times when the aeroplanes flew past and the instructors had to stop talking because of the incessant noise. i hope it didnt't get past 100 decibels though.

challenges are what makes us stronger and more mature. the events that occur shape us in a unique way; they influence our outlook, and are integral to developing our personality and our mentality. you may not succeed the first time, but with perseverance and determination, you will one day see the light. i would really like to thank those who encouraged me when i wanted to give up, especially the unit leaders who have been so pro-active and responsible during the camp.

i almost lost my morale and the drive to continue when i couldn't manage a simple task such as kicking the ball between two cones. i had managed to kick it through during the practice session but unfortunately i couldn't during the actual task. but thinking back, i think i had done my best.

somehow during the last day of the camp i didn't really want it to end. how time flies! during a short 3 days, we bonded with each other immensely, even though we were all from different units from all over singapore. it was amazing, how we all managed to get each other going when things got so discouraging. i really hope we can see each other again!

I know you're probably going to hate me for giving you away. but it was not an honest thing to do, claiming something that you didn't deserve. it was only right that i spoke up about it. I'm sorry. if i didn't do what i did, someone else would have done so as well.

here's a breakdown of what i do everyday.

1) EAT.

2) sleep.

3) Watch TV and be a couch potato.

4) Play computer games and blog. like now.

5) S-----L----- A----- C----- K. [i can sit motionless on the bed for 2 hours, doing nothing. like a stone.]

6) Preparing my portfolio [at the rate i'm going, i'll take one year to finish half an essay. that way i'll take 10 years to finish the minimum requirement. i seriously need some inspiration. and motivation. humour me.]

7) Doing revision. not good. some questions are terribly complicated and i'm not in a good mood.

8) Reading books. some books are nice. others are not so nice. like they contain stuff that should be censored.

9) playing my rubik's revenge. quite okay. at least i can solve it unless they're in a few permutations.

10) Studying for Jap Proficiency test.

I found this rather lame thing in my diary. There is a quote on Page xxx saying:

"Life is not a dress rehearsal."

Quite true actually.

I was rather bored during literature sometime during March this year, and I continued:

"It is a shirt rehearsal."

My tablemate thought this was a cold joke.

And you probably agree. (I myself think so too, now).

But, they didn't seem to explain why life is not a dress rehearsal. If life is not a dress rehearsal, what is it then? A skirt rehearsal, spectacle rehearsal, or a dramatic life-action play?

That's the trouble with some of these quotes. They don't really serve much purpose in illuminating our path if only the end result or the negative is mentioned, and the rest is left to us to figure out on our own.

Oh but don't get me wrong. Some quotes are really good. Like the one about "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

At least we can see why.

My sister just came back from Cambodia(: She brought one whole baggage full of (exotic) items home! They were boarded up in a 4.5 star Hotel during their 4 day 3 night stay there. She sent a few interesting sms-es:

1)Something about an 8-year-old girl grabbing a 15cm long lizard using her BARE hands and throwing it out of the window. Bravery, I call that. Ahem Ahem.

2)Another story about a rat jumping out from under a bookshelf. Heard the library hadn't been dusted in YEARS.

3)Half the teachers woke up late on their first day (I laughed until I had an acute sore in my stomach at that one). My sister dosed of too after picking up the wake-up call at 4 am in the morning.

Like what do you expect? 4 am in the morning, right after a long flight the day before that only enabled one to have 3 hours of sleep?

Fast forward to what she brought back home. Notice I bracketed the word exotic.

TEACHER'S DAY
Had ACES (All children exercise simultaneously) day before that.

It was really quite fun. The High impact just gets your adrenaline going. We were to do the workout in the field. Guess what. It had rained heavily the night before and the field was muddy. Most of us had our shoes splashed with mud. And mine had just been whitewashed the night before. Psssst.

Then was teacher's day celebrations. The Highlight of the whole thing was really the long long skit about 417 and their misdeeds. I LAUGHED LIKE SIAO. Seriously. There were a lot of funky nicknames, lots of jokes, and an infinite number of puns. The teachers really know how to act. The entire thing was like hahahahahahahaha, although there was a tinge of erm...ahem... in it. Mensuration. Pan-Tee (a name). Talking about the female anatomy during Biology "lessons". You get my point.

Oh yeah I also went back to my primary school. Evokes feelings of nostalgia. Met Agnes, Huiling, ZhenXiang, Darrel, and a few other classmates. We visited a few teachers, most of whom thought we were already secondary four (!) I don't mean to be rude or anything, but we were chased out of the staffroom by a certain cynical teacher who seemed to have re-entered the education profession due to a shortage of cash. HA. HA. HA.

Had a meal @ Lot 1 with Agnes, Huiling, Zhen Xiang, and Darrel. Took really nice neoprints after that. Another learning point. 4-5 people's the ideal number if you're going for both quality and quantity. I'll upload the scanned version if I have time :)

THE SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS!<3 Yes, liberty at long last! (Although it is a mere 7 days) This holiday is really GOOD, especially when one can take this time to catch up on some sleep. I have been slowly gnawing on my homework. Ahhh, this comes as a side effect to holidays. Lack of motivation.

I have decided to post something on my blog. I shall stop exacerbating the bacteria which are currently decomposing my blog and I shall revive it! Yes!

I was just commenting to someone on MSN that she must have fed her blog an elixir. Mine had been dead for 3 months and it had not been given a proper burial. I guess its owner was just too caught up to give it even a shread of attention. Poor thing.

Right. Since it's the first post after a millenium, I shall keep it short and sweet.

These 3 months have been an eventful one for me. Amidst all that homework, clutter, CIP sessions, PTs, and Assignments, it has been a very fortunate thing that I haven't collapsed. Okay, one might say that it's too strong a word to use. But I just well, can't find another word to describe all the stress, rejoicings, work, and play.

OM full dress rehearsal today.

Reached school @ about 7 o'clock just to get ready for the actual rehearsal. We had to move all the props from the Squash courts near the D&T to the CLC on the 4th floor of Block D. It wasn't very tedious, except that we had to move a few large adjoined boxes up the starcase to the fourth floor. We only thought of fixing wheels on much later, after the whole thing was over.

The rehearsal didn't go very well. In fact it didn't go well at all. Mime was our genra and it completely flopped. It was "suicidal", as described by one of the judges. We didn't have lots of action, puns, drama nor energy. The mimer didn't focus on expressing her actions properly; she didn't even choose and apprioprate costume. Her baggy white jacket and black long pants must have looked like pyjamas to the audience. And to think she actually pasted black stripes on her cream coloured jacket. It must have made her look like a zebra prancing around on stage. How... awkward.

She could have done much, much better, isn't it?

Yes and that mimer was me, performing the role that I had just known about the day before.

[oh well, nevermind. At least we came up with a new script today :) It isn't really finalised yet, but I just hope that it'll work out this time. C'mon, there's just 2 more weeks and we'll get to enjoy the fruit of our labour very, very soon!]

Okay so it turns out that the ttime people didn't really make it through the auditions, probably because the judges didn't see our whole year participate in it. Pretty sad y'know. Honestly their dance steps were quite interesting. But not to despair! There's still next year and the year after that :)

I went for Library CIP on Saturday and Sunday for 3 hours each, shelving books and basically helping the counter staff out. I got to enter a room that was usually out-of-bounds to the public. Basically the books are actually divided into many sub-categories after being scanned in the bookdrop. Books from the general section are categorised by numbers while those in the young adults' collection and Adults' fiction section are categorised by Alphabets. What I had to do was re-shelve them according to Alphabetical order/ numerical and decimal order for around 3 hours.

I'm not really having convoluted thoughts about it, just mixed feelings. CIP strands for Community Involvement Program, so I'm actually quite pleased about having helped out at my community library and attempting to correct those errors I make whenever I start a frantic search for a particular book/ pick out books that I don't seem to agree with >.< [random intervention: I just realised that the answer for the female solo voice in between soprano and alto is called ' Contra-Alto'. This is just grr-eat. Who gave me the notion that voice wouldn't be tested? No one, I think. It was my own dumb type of... should I say, prediction, generalisation, hypothesis (an incorrect one at that). Ugh.]

But luckily I think it only cost me 2 marks. Call that Ah -Q mentality I guess.

Whew SA week's over and the long-awaited holidays are now here again! :) I'm really looking forward to enrolment camp, haha. Oh ya it's really nice to know that you're not using your own internet. Anybody wants to guess where I am now?

Oh yes the ttime ppl just had their auditions yesterday. Wonder how it went. Really sorry that I had my piano exam yesterday so I couldn't go and support you all :( Btw good luck! I know you all will get in, `cos the dance is so good! REALLY :))

I took my Piano theory exam yesterday. It went quite well, except that there was one question which asked "What is the name of the female solo voice which is in between the Soprano and Alto?" I didn't know the answer to that. So I decided to try my luck with it and write a portmenteau of the words 'Soprano' and 'Alto'. It was "Soto". Imagine. It sounds like 'sotong' >.<

Okay now I'm down with quite a pile of Japanese homework. The school's sent a letter to MOELC to excuse all the RGS students from Third Lang, but then we'll still have to do all the homework and study the grammar structures and vocabulary ourselves. I better get down to work now.

YAY CHINESE NEW YEAR IS HERE! :)

All the pineapple tarts, love letters, chocolates, cashews, pistacchios, sweets, soft drinks, peanuts, and most of all, 'Ba-kua', here I come! xD

Oh yes, this is the Golden Pig Year, so shouldn't the Ba-kua taste twice as nice? :)

Yup so I've been to my paternal grandparents' house for reunion dinner already. (on New Year's eve) We had steamboat and beehoon for dinner. I ate quite a lot of meatballs, haha. More than 5, I think.

Okay over at my maternal grandparents' house we also had steamboat too. But there was a lot more variety. Cuttlefish, beef and what not, even abalone!

Not to mention that nice carp-shaped glutinous rice cake (nian gao). I ate the "fish" head whole. >.<

Oh I just realised that my redcross accreditations are just around the corner! My first aid is really terribly below standard :/ so I better start mugging really hard! There's an entire first aid manual to read, not forgetting the practical part of tying and retying the different types of bandages.

But then, after all this ranting, I still hope to get through this accreditation :)
